Top 10 Free Software Downloads

Are you looking for free and useful software for your computer? Here are my favourites. Basically, I installed all of them on each of my computers.

Google Pack – Google Pack is a bundle of free software selected by Google. The latest version for Windows 7 consists of Google Chrome Web Browser, Google Apps, Google Picasa, Adobe Reader, Google Earth, Google Toolbar for IE, Google Desktop, and avast! Free Antivirus. Aside from this standard list, there are few other software available for downloads.

Open Office – For whatever reason, if you don’t plan to install Microsoft Office, there is always Open Office which is a nice free alternative of Microsoft Office. It is open source, fully featured, and compatible with Microsoft Office documents. I always consider Open Office as a free version of Microsoft Office, you will like it.

GIMP – Again, for whatever reason, if you don’t want to use Photoshop, and you are looking for a free Photoshop alternative, GIMP the GNU Image Manipulation Program could be your best choice. Supported platforms include Linux, Windows, Mac, Sun Solaris, and FreeBSD. Probably GIMP is the best versatile free image retouching and editing tool.

Notepad++ – Need a free source code editor for your website development? For a casual programmer like myself, a free text editor like Notepad++ would come in handy. Notepad++ is one of most popular free text editor for Windows, and it supports many programming languages such as php, perl, python, and many more.

Spybot Search & Destroy – Spybot S & D is a popular adware / spyware removal program working with the Windows environment. Its TeaTimer module can provide real-time protection against undesirable registry changes. Spybot S & D is currently free for personal use.

Malwarebytes – Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware is a free application that finds and removes malware. A paid version, which provides real time protection and flash memory scanning, is also available. In my opinion, I believe Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware works better than Spybot Search & Destroy. Nevertheless, both are free, so I have them both installed. Once I have some malware trouble, McAfee couldn’t detect it, Spybot Search & Destroy couldn’t remove it, at last, Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware did the job and clean up the mess.

CCleaner – Every browser has a function to clean up their cache files, history and cookies. Unfortunately, most of the time, they don’t perform their jobs very well. CCleaner is a free cleaning tool that will clean up all areas of your computer including browser temporary files, cookies, history, recycle bin, log files and recent documents. An advanced feature called the registry cleaner can also help maintaining your registry entries, removing old and unused entries.

FileZilla – If you happen to run a website or blog, you need a fast and reliable FTP program for files uploading. FileZilla is an open source software distributed free of charge under the GNU license. Some of the best features are:
support multiple connections to more than one site, support resume and transfer of large files, directory comparison.

IrfanView – IrfanView is a free image viewer that can view, edit and convert images and play video / audio files. It is small and compact, and only supports Windows. It also comes with some simple painting features, but GIMP might work better in those areas.

WordWeb – WordWeb is an English thesaurus and dictionary for Windows and iPhone. The free version include 150000 root words and 120000 synonym sets. Sometimes, when you need to do some article spinning, WordWeb can get you some synonyms conveniently.

Free YouTube Download – This is my favourite free YouTube downloader. From time to time, you might need to update your downloader to make sure it is in compliance with the current YouTube setting.

So, instead of looking for a free Microsoft Office download, or free Photoshop download, why not give Open Office or GIMP a try? All of the above mentioned software are free and working. If you know of any other cool, free, open source software, please drop me a note.
