As of now, there are roughly 377 membership plugins listed in the WordPress plugin directory. All are free plugins with limited features. If you want more features and better technical support, you are encouraged to upgrade, average upgrade fee is around $100 for a year of support. Based on the number of downloads, there are quite a few that are worth a look:
Users Ultra Membership Plugin (3000+ installs, 178 reviews) – The free version include functions like Private Messages, Post/Page Protection, Paypal Membership System Recurring & One-time Billing, User Reviews, and reCaptcha spam protection… The paid membership Pro version gets you more options like Set Custom Role on Registration, Medallions and Fulfillments, bbPress Integration, User Online/Offline Status, Social Connect Buttons… There are 4 plans to choose from: Personal $59.97 / 1 site / 1 year support, Plus $99.97 / 3 sites / 1 year support, Professional $119.97 / unlimited sites / 1 year support, and $169.97 / unlimited sites / 2 years support.
Paid Memberships Pro (40000+ installs, 94 reviews) – Paid Memberships Pro is a membership WordPress plugin which allows you to collect payment via Stripe, Authorize.net, or PayPal. For each membership level you can define an initial payment along with a recurring payment plan, price, membership terms, and optional free or reduced-price for trial period. For community and developer support or extra features such as affiliate tracking and drip-feed content, you have the options of choosing $97 / 1 year PMPro Core support, or $197 / 1 year PMPro Plus support.
Membership 2 (10000+ installs, 41 reviews) – With Membership 2, you have 4 membership options, i.e. Standard, Dripped Content, Guest, and Default. Choose one from one of four base membership options, then configure the perfect system to fit your site’s goals. All things WordPress are protected – pages, posts, comments, categories, menus, URLs, content by user role, media files, forums, downloads, videos… Advanced features include coupon system, recurring payment and many more. When you visit the developer’s website, you get a special discount of 50% on your first payment, so you can $49.5 / monthly, or $103.5 / 3 month, $294 / 12 months.
When searching for membership WordPress plugin, Codecanyon also has 125 results. There is one that I am particularly interested in.
UserPro – User Profiles with Social Login (10272 Sales, 5963 Comments, 4.47 average based on 1035 ratings) – The feature list is quite comprehensive. Just to name some: MailChimp Integration, AWeber Integration, Lightbox support for user uploaded avatars and photos, Gravatars support, Online / Offline User Status, Display user country flag, Display Online Users, Content Restriction, User Badges and Achievements, Member Directory Listing, Responsive Videos support and many good stuff. All for only $29. However, this plugin does not include payment integration. There are a few add-on that I consider essential, i.e. Payment (support PayPal & Stripe, one-time and recurring) $16, Private Messages $17, MyMail (newsletter) $11, Social Wall $16.
So, if you are planning to start a paid membership site, what kind of website you want to build?
